Abu Simbel is two fantastic and huge rock-cut temples in Abu Simbel’s village, Aswan, Upper Egypt. They stand on the western bank of Nasser’s Lack. In the 13th century, during the reign of the second Ramses king, these two twin temples were carved out underneath the mountain. These two temples served as a lasting monument to the second Ramses king of the ancient Egyptian era.

    

 

UNESCO started an informational and fun-raising campaign in 1959 and cooperated with the Egyptian government to care about the project of saving the touristic site of Abu Simbel. Because of the reservoir that was built by the construction of Aswan High Dam threatened to overwhelm the temple of Abu Simbel.

 

 

Between1963-1968 an international team of scientists and engineers supported by a workforce and funds from more than 50 countries to dig out the top of the cliff and released both temples then reconstructed them in another place which was about 60 meters higher than their previous one. This marvelous and ancient historical site was classified in 1979, as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

 

 

 

 

It is noteworthy that at the front of the main Abu Simbel there are four massive statues of Ramses which are considered an example of spectacular of ancient Egyptian design.
