Of those pyramids that are located in modern Egypt, most are the tombs for the pharaohs of the country and also the pharaohs’ consorts. The tombs were made during the Old Kingdom and Middle Kingdom periods. The most famous pyramids in Egypt are the ones in Giza.

Some Giza Pyramids are considered the biggest structures ever made. Khufu Pyramid is the biggest Egyptian pyramid. This one is also the oldest wonder on earth, it is more than 2,000 years old.

The Most Outstanding Pyramids to Visit

When you book a tour package that will bring you to explore Egypt, pick one that will bring you to so many pyramids. The tour package is going to let you see the amazing wonders of Egypt. Some tour packages will bring you to see these incredible pyramids:

1. Abu Rawash

Abu Rawash is the most northerly pyramid in Egypt. This is actually a site where you will find the Pyramid of Djedefre. Djedefre himself was not only the successor of Khufu but was also Khufu’s son. The original size of this amazing pyramid was as big as the Menkaure pyramid.

The location of this pyramid is close to a major crossroads. It was easy to get stones to build the pyramids. The quarrying began in Roman times. Close to this pyramid, there is a small satellite pyramid that is in a much better preservation state.

2. Giza

The Khufu Pyramid has some other names like the Cheops Pyramids and the Great Pyramid. This one is located at the Giza Plateau along with some smaller pyramids that are known as the Khafre Pyramid or the Chephren Pyramid and Menkaure Pyramid or the Mycerinus Pyramid.

Also, there are some smaller satellite pyramids you will find in this location that is called the Queen’s pyramids. You will also see the Great Sphinx of Giza on this plateau. Khafre Pyramid is the only one that remains part of the original polished casing that is made of limestone.

Almost all Pyramids tours in Egypt itinerary include the Giza Plateau site. There, visitors will be able to see the greatest and most outstanding pyramids in Egypt.

3. Zawyet el-Aryan

This site is located between Abusir and Giza. Zawyet el-Aryan is a location of two unfinished pyramids from the Old Kingdom. The structure on the northern side is owned by the pharaoh Nebka. And the southern side’s structure is called the Layer Pyramid.

The Layer Pyramid was built in the third dynasty of pharaoh Khaba who was the successor of Sekhemkhet. Today, the height of this pyramid is about 56 feet or 17 meters. If the pyramid was completed, the height may reach 130 feet or 40 meters.

4. Abusir

This site has at least fourteen different pyramids. Those pyramids served as the major royal necropolis in the fifth dynasty. Abusir pyramids have construction quality that is inferior compared to the ones from the fourth dynasty. Probably this was because of the decrease in Egyptian royal power.

Those Abusir pyramids are smaller than their predecessors. Also, those pyramids were built of local limestone of low quality. On this site, the major pyramids are the Niuserre Pyramid, Neferirkare Kakai Pyramid, and Sahure Pyramid. Those pyramids are the best-preserved ones.

Abusir is also home to the Neferefre Pyramid, the incomplete pyramid. The biggest one is the Neferirkare Kakai Pyramid. Its height is 230 feet or 70 meters.

5. Saqqara

Saqqara is a site that has some awesome pyramids to visit. The biggest one is the Djoser Pyramid which is identified as the oldest substantial monumental structure in the world. Some other pyramids you will find in Saqqara include the Userkaf Pyramid, the Teti Pyramid, and the Medicare Pyramid.

Those pyramids are from first Egypt’s intermediate period. Saqqara also has the Unas Pyramid which is included as one of the best-preserved pyramids in Egypt. Along with the Userkaf Pyramid, Unas Pyramid was one of the restoration attempts that were conducted by  Khaemweset.

On the south side of Saqqara field, you will see some smaller pyramids called Djedkare Isesi Pyramid, Pepi I and Pepi II Pyramid, Ibi Pyramid, and Merenre Pyramid.

6. Dahshur

For many people, Dahshur is the most essential pyramid field located in Egypt, outside Saqqara and Giza. Before 1996, Dahshur was inaccessible since this site is located on a military base. The Sneferu Pyramid that is in the southern field is also known as Bent Pyramid.

People believe that Bent Pyramid is the first Egyptian pyramid that was designed to have smooth sides. As a smooth-sided pyramid, Bent Pyramid is super unique and visually impressive at once. A few kilometers to the Bent Pyramid’s north side, there are three pyramids.

Those three pyramids were constructed during Sneferu’s reign. The Red Pyramid is the first completed pyramid in the world that has smooth sides.

7. Mazghuna

The next site you are going to visit along with the tour guide is Mazghuna which is located on the southern side of Dahshur. There are some mud-brick pyramids that were built in the late Middle Kingdom. Probably, the builders of this pyramid were Sobekneferu and Amenemhat IV.
